A craft talk on the effect of reading on a writer's practice.

Rumaan Alam is the author of the novels Rich and Pretty, That Kind of Mother, and Leave the World Behind. His writing has appeared in The New York Times, New York Magazine, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, Bookforum, and the New Republic. He studied writing at Oberlin College and lives in New York with his family.

Join us for a conversation on "How to Launch Your Own Company in the Genetic Counseling Field." This panel shares insights from Jill Davies from GeneMatters (acquired by Genome Medical), Eleanor Griffith from Grey Genetics, and Ellen Matloff from My Gene Counsel. The panelists will share stories from their graduate school experiences, to launching their own successful companies, to a peek into their current work life. They will reveal what sparked their ideas to go into business, how and why they decided to pursue this innovative professional path, the pros and cons of this line of work, and advice for genetic counselors considering following in their footsteps and launching their own company. This session will highlight the perspectives of these innovative pioneers on the possibilities and opportunities for the field to grow moving forward.

A.E. Osworth is a transgender novelist and a Visiting Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University. Their debut, WE ARE WATCHING ELIZA BRIGHT (Grand Central Publishing 2021), was a finalist for the Oregon Book Award and long listed for The Center for Fiction’s First Novel Prize, the Brooklyn Public Library Literary Prize, and The Tournament of Books. They also have a decade-long career writing nonfiction on the internet, which includes a stint as Geekery Editor for Autostraddle and as a columnist for Catapult. You can find their work on Guernica, Electric Literature and Quartz, among others.

Over the course of the semester, choreographer Netta Yerushalmy, with assistance from Catie Leasca, has set original work and collaborated with our students enrolled in Performance Project. This Performance Project class and performance is made possible by the Barbara Bray Ketchum Artist-in-Residence Fund.

We look forward to formally acknowledging and celebrating our winter graduates’ accomplishments as part of spring commencement in May. Information on how to participate in Commencement 2023 will be shared with grads after the new year.
